In February 2013 I decided that my MX5 had to go in favour of a decent V8 lump.. After searching around fruitlessly with all the non returned calls... i was thoroughly fed up of trying to find a decent XK8 worth buying. Chatting to a friend one day he recommended I visit Philip Welch, a specialist car dealer, just a couple off miles of the York ring road. I had my reservations. How good was he? How well did he know his cars? Did he really care... all the usual fears about an unkown dealer . Years of couldnt care less attitudes, and Arthur Daley dealers linger long. How wrong was I this time. My wife and I arrived at a well-lit, very accessible showroom and service facility. We were made to feel welcome from the very start. Philip introduced himself and offered us hot drinks, and invited us to look around both his showroom and his workshop whilst he completed his attention with an earlier customer. We hung around to listen to their conversation, and a subsequent one that took place on by phone shortly afterwards. In a nutshell the conversations were about customers changing their cars (after about 18 months) and buying something else from him. I learnt later that a high proportion of sales are like this. They like him. He has a regular turnover simply selling quality, reliable sports cars to the same repeat customers. Anyway whilst this all was going on we also took the opportunity to talk to Paul, his engineer, who is as well trained, conversant and enthusiastic about the cars he looks after as any garage I have ever been in. The service area incidentally was as clean and tidy and pristine as the showroom, his office and the loos (an excellent sign). There were some lovely vehicles in stock, including Philip`s own competition winning E-type, with two intriguing signs on it. "Not for Sale" and "Do you believe in the afterlife? If not, touch this car and you will find out!" Enough said. Any fears I may have had were completely dispelled. We talked extensively about each of the models he had in stock, and after allowing me a test run of my own choosing, we settled on acquiring an ice blue 2001 XK8 with only 37,000 miles on the clock. It had been yet another car that Philip had traded through his showroom previously. We were shown the service history and invited to speak to the previous owner (which we did) ... a pleasant experience it was too. There were no fears, complaints or gremlins reported to us by them, and we were convinced we were getting an exceptional car. "When could we have it?" was answered by a real first, " Right now. Just pay the balance on your trade in and you can drive it out of the showroom". Never has this happened before.... new or used. There is always some useless reason why they can`t let us have it there and then. not with Philip welch, every car for sale is available there and then as far as he is concerned. Extraordinary! The car came with a three month warranty on absolutely everything. When we pointed out we were going on holiday Philip was quick to say, "well we`ll make that a four month warranty!" The car was given a full service and an independent MOT. Did we need the warranty? Well, yes and no. Firstly it has by and large been faultless. Secondly after we had it for about six months it developed a squeak which we thought came from the rear suspension. so we returned to discuss the issue. Again, i was worried how much this would cost as we were long out of the guarantee. Scrupulous investigation in the workshop by Paul identified that in fact it was coming from the front near side suspension arm and ball joint. At the same time the auto dim mirror and auto light sensors seemed to decide to pack in as well. New parts were duly ordered and we booked it in the following week, leaving it overnight for collection the following day. When we collected it (well beyond our warranty period) Philip`s attitude was even more surprising about the cost. " I didnt expect that to happen and its not something I would expect you to pay for either. There is no bill to pay" the parts alone would have cost a few hundred pounds! Never have I either bought a car on a trade in (new or second hand) where I was actually treated like a human being and a valued customer. Almost every dealer just wants to sell you a car and hope you never come back. Not so with Philip, he wants you to come back. And many do... often! I certainly will. I have now had the car for the best part of two years. I had a service that cost me only £185.10p (and the previous owners service had cost them £240.77) less than the ridiculous sum Mazda charged me for a new and year old car. The Jag has done a modest 5000 miles or so and is averaging just nudging 25 mpg (mostly in sports mode). It has had a puncture, but thats no ones fault. It is genuinely the most reliable, comfortable, economical car that I have ever had the chance to own (other than the fuel consumtion which is still very acceptable). Furthermore it continues to make me smile when i take it out. As for Philip Welch and his staff, they made both the acquisition and the subsequent ownership nothing but a pleasure. I have no doubts their sucess as specialist dealers is due to the genuine care and concern they feel for both the quality of their cars they deal in and the way they treat their customers. They are truly an exception to the rule.
Mr Welch, it is a week now since we purchased the Mazda MX5 Roadster, and I just wanted to say how delighted we are with the car. Initially, I searched the Internet locally for this make of car,and whilst there was no shortage of cars, it soon became clear that my idea of good condition and pristine were poles apart from other advertisers. I then widened my search and fortunately came across Philip Welch Specialist Cars. The rest as they say is history. We travelled to Yorkshire, and I think it is fair to say that within minutes we had decided to purchase the car. The car was pristine, and was as advertised. If someone is looking for a particular make and model of a car and you see it advertised on Philip Welch's web site then I would not hesitate recommending that they go and view the car. Dear Philip, I thought it was time I sent you some feedback. From the moment I walked into your showroom I felt welcome at ease and comfortable. The standard of your vehicles is superb and within minutes had bought the Speed Yellow Porsche Boxster S. It didn`t take me long to realise that the quality of this car (like all your others) was way above the other examples I had viewed of a similar age and price. I ran the car and found there was a fault with the fuel gauge (you could not have known about this, it being a niggling fault that only showed up after 150 miles). You assured me that it would be put right, because, Philip Welch did not sell cars with faults and your standards would not be compromised. I left the car in your hands whilst away on holiday and thanks to your mechanic Paul, yourself and your brother for doing the long test drive the fault was rectified and the car duly returned to me in pristine condition.
